Topps 2023 MLB series 1 hit store shelves recently and I had the opportunity to contribute some artwork for the set. Each illustration I made was an original drawing that was inserted into a random pack. As this is one of the more widely available baseball sets Topps makes, being sold at hobby and retail stores across the world, the odds of finding one of my sketch cards is exceedingly rare!
Topps 2023 MLB Series 1 Sketch Card DesignÂ
This product is part of the baseball flagship series that releases every year in three sets: Series 1, 2, and Update. I’ve contributed artwork to this product for a few years now (see my work on the 2018 set I’ve previously posted about) and this time I wanted to do a few throwback border designs on the cards. On some cards I drew a thick-black-lined circle with a bottom square frame that was similar to baseball designs from the 1930s and on other cards I mimicked the bottom border designs from Topps 1993 baseball cards.

Who to Draw for Topps 2023 Baseball Cards?
On the 2022 sets I drew a players from a particular position and I did that again for Topps 2023 MLB Series 1. For this set I drew almost all pitchers, which is really time consuming to draw because of their awkward positions and intricate mits. To offset the time spent on the drawings, I opted to do the cards in a grey scale and just a pop of colour in the background. That pop of colour was usually the team’s colour, and sometimes that was carried over onto the jersey logos if they appeared in the drawing. Looking back on it I still quite like the grey tone approach and is something I’ll probably do again on an upcoming card project.
