Terminator 2 Trading Cards from Unstoppable
This is the second project I have had the pleasure of working on for Unstoppable Trading Cards. This trading card set is limited to 999 boxes, and might be sold out by now. To my knowledge, there has only been two other Terminator 2 trading card products which were produced in 1991 by Impel and Topps. I specifically remember collecting the Impel cards as a kid but unfortunately didn’t hang on to them.
Growing up in the 1980s I was a huge fan of action movies, especially Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. Terminator was easily one of my favourite movies and I’ll never forget in 1991 going to the theatres to see T2 with my dad. I loved it then as much as I do now and it is still one of the greatest action /sci-fi movies of all time. I’d say I re-watch the movie roughly once every year or two, and along with it the other Terminator movies and the criminally under-rated Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show. An opportunity to create licensed sketch cards for T2 was definitely something I was not going to pass up.
Creating the Sketch Cards
For a handful of the T2 cards I took my usual comic style approach to them; pencilling then inking the images like a comic book with minimal blacks and then adding Copic markers for colour. On some of the other cards I used polychromous pencil crayons, which is a medium I’ve been using more and more lately. For these, I pencilled the cards, added limited inks, coloured them with Copics, and then added a translucent matte gel across the cards that I go over again with the pencil crayons. I’m loving this matte gel as it adds a painted texture to the paper and allows for the pencil crayons to go over more easily than they would directly upon the paper.
On one card I experimented not using heavy inks and pencil crayons. This card, depicted below in the first sample sheet (bottom right with Robert Patrick pointing his finger), was created by allowing for a heavy usage of Copics and the blender marker. I was trying to go for a painted feel and I think it came out really well.
My Sketch Cards for Terminator 2
For this set I created 25 unique sketch cards that were inserted into the product. The below two sheets are examples of sketch cards I made for this product that were randomly inserted into packs.
Terminator 2 Artist Proof Sketch Cards
On every sketch card project artists are provided ‘x’ number of cards to resell. These are original drawings they created on the sketch cards and are called Artist Proofs. Sometimes these cards are left blank so people can commission a particular drawing on them or the artist draws what they want on the card and then sells them. In this case I drew images on my artist proofs and they are available for sale now.Â
