Star Wars: Chrome Perspectives Sketch Cards

For baseball fans, this was a big week with the release of Topps Chrome Baseball but in a far off galaxy is another shiny chunk of cardboard, Topps Star Wars: Chrome Perspectives. This set focuses on the latest Star Wars sequels, episodes VII-IX (check out some of my previous posts featuring artwork from other Star Wars sequels like Rise of Skywalker Series 2 or Last Jedi).

For this set, the characters, vehicles, worlds, and all that lies between is brought forth on premium card stock with a chrome finish. Like previous Star Wars trading card sets this product also includes sketch cards, which happily I got to scribble a few drawings upon!

Pack Inserted Sketch Cards

The sketch cards for this set look similar to previous sets and despite the name, there is no chrome element to the cards. For the pack inserted cards I, as per usual, used a few different mediums when creating the artwork. Some of the cards were painted with gouache, some in acrylic, and some with light gouache washes and inked overtop.

Below are 8 examples of sketch cards I created that were included in the trading card set. Some of these, like the Luke painting, I was very tempted to keep as an artist return and I think it’s a sign I did some good artwork when I am torn about what paintings to keep.

Something I’ve not done before is to use a very light wash of gouache overtop of a pencil drawing and then use brushed india ink overtop. The Rey card below was done in the same manner except instead of brushed ink I used pencil crayons to add definition. Using light washes is a lot faster than what I was doing on some of the other cards, like the Luke painted in acrylic, but I think they still look pretty solid. Artist Proof Sketch Cards

For my artist proofs, three were painted with acrylics and oil pencils were used overtop to add definition, while a fourth card (featuring Carrie & Billie) was painted in gouache with oil pencils again added overtop. What is a little bit different is that I wanted to paint some iconic scenes from the new movies instead of actors. One of the cards features the bomber seen at the start of the Last Jedi, with one of them exploding in space. The second scene I painted features a uniquely shaped gun turret at the rebel base on the planet Crait, again in the Last Jedi movie.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Series 2 Sketch Cards

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Series 2 is the final trading card installment to the last film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Back in December Series 1 released and for the printed card and sketch card imagery, they drew mainly from what was available from the trailers. Series 2 releases well after the movie had come and gone from the theatres, allowing for a lot more of the movie’s imagery to be used including imagery that would be spoilers to the film.

Artist Proof Sketch Card

I’ve been using acrylic paints more and more on my sketch cards. It takes a little longer than markers and pencils crayons or inks, but I’m really enjoying it. I feel that my acrylic work is getting better and for this project I decided that all of my artist returns would be done in acrylic.

I was able to retain four sketch cards as artist proofs. One was a portrait of Rey that I felt had a different vibe than my other portraits of her. I liked the light and dark side showing of her face, and used mixed media of acrylics and pencil crayons. The helmeted woman is Zorii Bliss, a fan favourite from the new film. She didn’t have a huge role in the movie but her costume looks bad ass!

My last two artist proofs are a puzzle of Rey & Kylo dueling in a watery environment on top of the remains of the Death Star. I tried to capture the movement and mood instead of being bogged down with the details on the figures. A lot of fun to paint!

Pack Inserted sketch cards

This project included regular and shaped sketch cards. I used a few different mediums and below are three that I painted with acrylics. I’ve been quite enjoying working with acrylics and when I use them I go over the painting with pencil crayons to give them more definition & detail. I also used gouache on a handful of the cards, and some were done in a more comicbooky style with markers & brushed ink. Love changing up mediums on projects 🙂

Magik Drawing

I’ve been looking over some of my more recent drawings and it confirmed what I already knew; I’ve drawn A LOT of portraits. It’s a product of how I spend a lot of my time drawing sketch cards that entail drawing mostly portraits (Star Wars and baseball), and that when I am commissioned it is often from people asking me to draw a portrait of this or that person. Don’t get me wrong, I love drawing portraits, but I also love drawing other stuff like comicbook characters!

Since I wanted to enlarge the scope of my portfolio, I decided I’d start with drawing a few of my favourite comicbook characters. I haven’t had a tonne of time to do this, but I did recently finish a sketch of Magik. Also known as Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, she’s an awesome character from the New Mutants, a comicbook from Marvel. The sister to Colossus, the Russian metal clad mutant of the X-Men team, Magik has the ability to teleport between dimensions & use magic, along with weilding an awesome ‘soul’ sword.

The Drawing

Anyways, below is the drawing I did and in the near future I might make a very limited print run of it. The original is also for sale, and measures 6×8″. I used india ink, copics, gesso, and gouache on the drawing. Like most of my drawings, it started off with the pencil sketch and then I inked it. After that I added copics markers for the colours and grey tones. I wanted to try something a little different so I added a watered down layer of gesso to the back, black area. Overtop of the gesso I added black gouache to darken it again, but the mix of gesso and gouache gave it a different feel that I quite liked. Lastly, I used pencil crayons to mark the outline over the flames and then a little bit of white acrylic splatter.

For the print, which is shown below, I made a few digital edits to it with bringing up the whites and adding a texture to the background. The texture is of concrete which I thought looked pretty cool and allowed Magik to pop a bit more. I also made the image a little darker than the original and highlighted the white halo around Magik.

Cryptozoic DC CZX Super-Heroes & Super-Villains Sketch Cards

Cryptozoic DC CZX Super-Heroes & Super-Villains Sketch Cards was released in 2019, so I’m a little behind on posting about the artwork I did for this set 🙂 This set focused on the movies from the DC Universe. Including the Watchmen, Superman vs. Batman, the Justice League, and many more!

This isn’t the first project I’ve done for Cryptozoic. In the past I’ve worked on The Ghostbusters, Rick & Morty, DC Bombshells, and there might be a few more in the near future!

This was a premium trading card set from Cryptozoic that boasts a very strong checklist of signers. You could nab an autograph from actors like Gal Gadot or Ben Affleck, or a sketch card from an artist like yours truly!

Women of Star Wars Sketch Cards

Women of Star Wars is a brand new line of Star Wars trading cards from Topps that celebrates the women of this brilliant universe. From the female characters themselves to the women that portray them, there is a very deep list to draw from in this set.

This is another Star Wars set where I could draw from characters across the movies and TV shows (see 2018 Star Wars Masterwork for another set), and for the first time that included The Mandalorian. I drew many of my favourite characters like Ahsoka, Sabine, & Jynn Erso, but also focused on a few amazing Mandalorian characters who were played by actresses that I adore from other shows.

Ming-Na Wen is an actress known for her voice acting of Mulan in Mulan, Agent May in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, and the critically acclaimed role of June in The Joy Luck Club. Ming-Na also recently joined the Star Wars universe when she played Fennec Shand in the Mandalorian, which placed a coveted third jewel in her Disney crown as she has now been a Disney princess, a Marvel super-hero, and a character in the Star Wars universe!

Booklet Sketch Card

In addition to the regular sketch cards I drew for this project were booklet sketch cards. These had the dimensions of two regular sketch cards that were joined in the middle and folded like a book. Two of the booklets I drew were inserted into the packs and one was kept as an artist proof!

Below is the booklet artist proof I retained for sale. Featuring one of my favourite Star Wars characters, Ahsoka, fighting the Seventh Sister in Star Wars: Rebels.

Regular sketch cards

I went back and forth between using gouache and copics & inks on this project’s artwork. I also created an arrow like design to go behind some of the portraits, as seen in the orange shape behind Enfys Nest below.

#raisetheruth Charity Auction

I am trying something new by adding auctions of my sketch cards to my website, and the first of these will be a charity auction.

Up for auction is my hand-drawn artist proof (AP) sketch card from Journey to the Last Jedi. This is a hand-drawn sketch card I made, and is part of the small collection of APs I receive from my trading card projects. I have decided to auction this AP in support of the #raisetheruthcharity. The auction will last until 8pm Mountain Time, June 17th and the opening bid starts at $40 Canadian.

What is #raisetheruth?

Dave Gaskin’s sister Ruth has been struggling with a series of chronic, degenerative and debilitating illnesses for several years. As a result, she cannot walk easily without assistance and spends her days in pain on a cocktail of medications. You can read more about it on her blog.

At the beginning of June 2019, Birmingham City Council – through a clerical error and Job Centre Plus incompetence – demanded that she pay back £5000 in allegedly ‘overpaid’ housing benefit. They want the money within 2 weeks and have cancelled her housing benefit payments.

It could take a year to contest this decision which means she potentially is at risk of being made homeless. Added to this, she’s one of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who have had to fight a Government assessment, that she’s ‘Fit For Work’.

Official UK Government figures show that over 17,000 people have died while waiting to hear from their PIP assessments. Independent testimony places the number much higher. The UN has identified that 14 million people in the UK live in poverty – unable to afford proper housing or food.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation highlighted that 1.5m people experienced destitution in 2017 – meaning they had less than £10 a day after housing costs or had to go without at least two essentials such as shelter, food, heat, light, clothing or toiletries during a one-month period.

It goes without saying that family & friends are rallying around her and plans are in place for a fundraising event in Birmingham at the end of June but we need help. Your help.

Your donation will raise money for Ruth’s living expenses and to contest the council’s demands.

Dave Gaskin’s sister needs our help and doesn’t deserve to join the thousands of other vulnerable people in the UK who’s lives are made miserable by a system that repeatedly lets them down.

Why am I Supporting this Cause?

I am supporting this cause because Dave Gaskin is a fantastic fellow artist who is consistently donating his works for charity and I want to help him out in his time of need. I also hate seeing people with health problems not be able to receive the help they should get from their local government. To not receive the basics such as affordable health care and housing is a universal problem and while this will not fix those issues, it will help raise awareness and aid on individual in need.
