Stranger Things Art
I have created artwork for three Topps Stranger Things trading card sets and then in 2019 I had an illustration published in the Stranger Things artbook, published by Printed in Blood. Creating official Stranger Things Art is one of my absolute favourite things I’ve done so far as an artist!
Why is Stranger Things so Good?
Stranger Things hits that sweet spot of genre I love. It’s a little retro, features dynamic characters, and has a ragtag group of kids battling monsters in a science fiction setting. It draws from so many other movies and TV shows I’ve loved too, like the Goonies, Aliens, and more!Â
As for art, there is a lot to draw from and be inspired from in Stranger Things. The cast all have vibrant personalities that are fun to draw and of course the creatures are crazy fun to draw. I love that with the creatures you don’t have to be precise in how you depict them and can instead just have fun!
Which Stranger Things Character are You?
I’d probably go with Dustin. I’m a geek myself who loves comic books and science fiction but I also love studying the sciences -I have a degree in Archaeology. Comment below with which character you most relate to!
How My Stranger Things Art Was Made?
This was a large, 11×17″ illustration. I don’t often work on such large paper as so much of my time is devoted to trading card art that ranges from 2.5×3.5″ to 5×7″. I found working on such a large surface both freeing as I could do so much with it but also challenging as colouring spaces required large swatches of solid colour, which I’m not used to.
I begin this drawing with figuring out who I’d draw. After settling on the kids I wanted to show the duality of Will and have Eleven pushed into the background a bit. I chose an image of Mike, Dustin, and Lucas in the abandoned bus, all of which is imagery from Season 1. The background were stylistic stars that were shaped loosely like the outline to a demogorgon’s head.
The background and stars were painted with acrylic paint and the rest of the image was done with copic markers and polychromos pencil crayons. I began with a pencil sketch and then blotted it out with a kneaded eraser. Copic markers were applied overtop of the pencils and then pencil crayons were used to define lines and add more depth of colour.
