Cryptozoic DC CZX Super-Heroes & Super-Villains Sketch Cards

Cryptozoic DC CZX Super-Heroes & Super-Villains Sketch Cards was released in 2019, so I’m a little behind on posting about the artwork I did for this set 🙂 This set focused on the movies from the DC Universe. Including the Watchmen, Superman vs. Batman, the Justice League, and many more!

This isn’t the first project I’ve done for Cryptozoic. In the past I’ve worked on The Ghostbusters, Rick & Morty, DC Bombshells, and there might be a few more in the near future!

This was a premium trading card set from Cryptozoic that boasts a very strong checklist of signers. You could nab an autograph from actors like Gal Gadot or Ben Affleck, or a sketch card from an artist like yours truly!

Artist Proofs

Most of these have already sold but I do have a few left, and can always be commissioned to draw one of these characters on plain paper.

Women of Star Wars Sketch Cards

Women of Star Wars is a brand new line of Star Wars trading cards from Topps that celebrates the women of this brilliant universe. From the female characters themselves to the women that portray them, there is a very deep list to draw from in this set.

This is another Star Wars set where I could draw from characters across the movies and TV shows (see 2018 Star Wars Masterwork for another set), and for the first time that included The Mandalorian. I drew many of my favourite characters like Ahsoka, Sabine, & Jynn Erso, but also focused on a few amazing Mandalorian characters who were played by actresses that I adore from other shows.

Ming-Na Wen is an actress known for her voice acting of Mulan in Mulan, Agent May in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, and the critically acclaimed role of June in The Joy Luck Club. Ming-Na also recently joined the Star Wars universe when she played Fennec Shand in the Mandalorian, which placed a coveted third jewel in her Disney crown as she has now been a Disney princess, a Marvel super-hero, and a character in the Star Wars universe!

Who are some of your favourite characters from The Mandalorian and do you have a favourite role that Ming-Na Wen has played?

Booklet Sketch Card

In addition to the regular sketch cards I drew for this project were booklet sketch cards. These had the dimensions of two regular sketch cards that were joined in the middle and folded like a book. Two of the booklets I drew were inserted into the packs and one was kept as an artist proof!

Below is the booklet artist proof I retained for sale. Featuring one of my favourite Star Wars characters, Ahsoka, fighting the Seventh Sister in Star Wars: Rebels.

Regular sketch cards

I went back and forth between using gouache and copics & inks on this project’s artwork. I also created an arrow like design to go behind some of the portraits, as seen in the orange shape behind Enfys Nest below.

Comment below with what your favourite of the mediums that I used and what you think of the orange arrow design I used.

Topps 2020 Baseball Series 1 Sketch Cards

Topps 2020 Baseball Series 1 was released last week and my artwork was included in it for the third year in a row. As a big baseball fan myself, I love the fact that I have the opportunity to create licensed MLB artwork of some of the best players in the game!

For many collectors, one of the appealing aspects of the first baseball set of the season is the opportunity to add the latest rookie cards to their collections. This year the main rookies are Gavin Lux, Bo Bichette, Yordan Alvarez, and Aristides Aquino. I made sure to draw all of these rookies plus the big stars of the game like Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Yadier Molina, and more!

Mediums

For this project, I decided to paint the majority of the sketch cards with gouache. I’m really loving this medium as I can use it on a multitude of different paper surfaces. The paint has an opaque characteristic that allows for great blending of colours and can be reactivated with water. It’s also great to use pencil crayons overtop to bring out details.

Except for a few of the gouache paintings, I added acrylic backgrounds of different colour patterns. I think it really helped everything pop and give the artwork a unique characteristic to it.

Samples of my Artwork

These sketch cards were all included in the packs. Let me know if you found any yourself!

Artist Return Sketch Cards

I’ve pre-drawn on a few of my artist return sketch cards but also left a couple blank for commissions. Contact me if you’re interested in picking up one of my blank sketch cards for commission or ask about larger illustrations that I can create for you!

Pet Portrait Art Commissions

I was commissioned to draw two pet portraits as Christmas gifts this year. Oddly, both commissions were of beagles! For both of these commissions I was provided a photo of the pet, with one of the pets only having a portion of the dog showing so I had to figure out what the hind legs looked like from other photos. In both commissions I created a nature background for the dogs, and in one I create an Art Nouveau design in the top right and bottom left corners.

For both of these illustrations I used 400lb Strathmore illustration boards. They measured roughly 9×12″ and I used a mix of gouache paint, gesso, acrylic, Copic markers, and polychromous pencil crayons. As in all of my artwork, I then sealed them with a fixative that prevents smudging and fading. For the gouache work I’ve been using the Pebeo gouache varnish.

Commission your own pet portrait

Both of these commissions were extremely satisfying to do. They are unlike much of what I’ve been recently working on (sports and star wars sketch cards), and would love to do more! If you are interested in a portrait of your pet or having one done for someone you know as a gift, please contact me here. Turnaround time is between 1 and 2 months right now and prices vary according to complexity and size of the image, but to give you an idea of pricing these two were $125US+shipping each.

Black Friday Sale on Sketch Card Commissions

Sketch card commission only $40 from now until Sunday! Only 20 commission slots available & these will be in your hand BEFORE Christmas!

These sketch cards will be in colour and drawn on plain sketch card paper. Limit of one character per sketch card, or it can be a ship, object, or whatnot but only one per card. Backgrounds in colour too but are minimal. Shipping is extra; I live in Canada so domestic shipping is free and to the US is $5 without tracking (tracking is an additional $10).

KISS Sketch Cards from Dynamite

Last year I was overjoyed to find out I would be drawing sketch cards for a brand new set of KISS trading cards! I’ve been a big fan of KISS for a long time, so this was definitely a dream project. In highschool my friends and I would listen to KISS on repeat and draw them in art class, and every other class in the corners of our notes and textbooks. I even had an old car that I would hide the rust spots by placing stickers overtop, one of which being the KISS logo. On New Years Eve, 1999, I saw KISS for the first time and sadly missed out on seeing them on their recent farewell tour. I was never an official member of the KISS Army but their music has been a part of my life and can often be heard playing in my office while I’m working!

The KISS trading cards from Dynamite are a 40th anniversary set from the first ever KISS trading card set. This first set was a 1978 set from Donruss. This is highly sought after 132 card set that new and old fans are still  collecting. The new Dynamite set has some nods to the original set with cards that form to create a large puzzle and amazing photography of the band. Adding to the original content, the new set has autographs from Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, artwork from the new Dynamite KISS comics with autographs from writers and artists from those series, plus original art cards (sketch cards) made by people like myself.

“Kiss trading cards are some of the most collectible memorabilia out there, they’ve been around since the early days of the band,” bassist Gene Simmons. “These new cards add to the tradition and the lore of Kiss, and I can’t wait for fans to get their hands on them.”  ultimateclassicrock.com

Sketch cards I made for the set

For this trading card set I focused primarily on depicting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Peter and Ace were also drawn in this set but not as frequently. There are only a few sketch cards where more than one band member was drawn on a card. The paper stock was too slick to use my polychromous pencil crayons on and it was too thin for paints, so I stuck to inks and markers. I actually quite like using just inks and markers here as it gave a comicbook feel to it that works great for KISS.

Artist returns

Topps 2019 Baseball Museum Collection

Back-to-back weeks of baseball goodness! This week Topps 2019 Baseball Museum Collection trading cards were released! These are a high-end, prestige format trading card set that is offered at card and collectible stores.

I have nine artist returns available from this project and three of my drawings were reproduced in this set for the Canvas Collection series. These three drawings are of Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken jr., & Ozzie Smith. Additionally, I created regular sketch cards and sketch cards done on shaped cards that were inserted into the packs! Check out my social media channels for examples of the cards I drew that wound up in the packs!

Artist Return Sketch Cards

Each one of the below artist return sketch cards are an original, one-of-one, hand drawn art card. I use a mix of copics, pencil crayons, acrylic, & gouache paints to create these, and each one is signed on the back.

Reprints

These three cards are reprints of three sketch cards I drew for the set. I know that someone found the original Nolan Ryan sketch card but the other two are still out there! What I love about the three players they chose from what I drew to be reprinted, besides the fact that my art was reprinted, was that they chose three of my favourite players from when I was a kid. I grew up in and around St. Louis and saw quite a few Cardinals games in the 80s. Ozzie Smith, like so many other kids in the 80s, was my favourite player. His great smile, backflips in outfield, and amazing play was something that made him stand out and become my all-time favourite baseball player!

If you would like to purchase these directly from me and have them signed, or if you have a copy yourself that you would like me to sign, please contact me! If you’re purchasing them they are $7 each or $15 for all three plus shipping.
