Ghostbusters Artbook RELEASED!

A few months ago I posted about how an illustration I created would be included in a Ghostbusters Artbook from Printed in Blood. Now I can share with you the illustration I created for it as the book has just been released!

The Design

The illustration was hand drawn and painted with some digital adjustments. I used mixed media of gouache paint, acrylic paint, oil pencil crayons, and copic markers on illustration board. For the digital edits I just cleaned up the white spaces and did some colour correction but otherwise it looks the same as the original.

My idea behind this was that I wanted to do something different from what I normally draw, and to use text in the design. The phrase “Who You Gonna Call” is synonymous with the Ghostbusters franchise, allowing the concept to not be specific to any of the movies or TV show. I also liked the idea of drawing the lettering the same as the font in the Ghostbusters logo, plus having it nice and bold so that it’s easily readable.

While I liked the idea of doing a text based design, just having the lettering wouldn’t be enough. So I went off designs I’ve seen before where characters or objects are drawn hanging off and on the letters. I thought it would be fun to do this here but with some of the more famous ghouls from the movie. Going a step further to tell a little bit of a story with the illustration I added the four Ghostbusters at the bottom shooting the letters with their proton packs. I debated removing the figures but ended up leaving them in place because it didn’t look quite finished without them.

In Places Between 2018 Book Cover

For the third year in a row I’ve been invited to create artwork for the Imaginative Fiction Writer’s Association’s annual anthology book, In Places Between: The Very Best Short Fiction of When Words Collide. This year I created the front cover illustration and the back cover graphics. I absolute love these projects and from what I heard, my illustration was very well received!

My concept for this year’s cover was to create an old, well lived in space that had elements of the fantastical. At the centre of this warm space is a young woman engrossed reading her book. I’m also infatuated with art nouveau, so included that type of stained glass in the background. I used a mixed media of Copic markers, polychromous pencil crayons, and gouache paint on warm press water colour paper. Some edits in Photoshop were added as well.

In Places Between Book Artwork

In 2016 and now again in 2017, I have been gratefully asked to contribute artwork to a local writer’s group annual anthology. This book, called In Places Between, is produced by the Imaginative Fiction Writers Association (IFWA) and is a fantastic group of local published and aspiring authors. In 2016, I was invited to create a single illustration for the book, which was used as a chapter illustration for one of the book’s short stories, The Pill. The next year I was invited back to do a considerable amount more with collaborating with fellow artist Tara Handelman. Tara created a beautiful blue painting that we used as the design’s background. I created an inked drawing of a man climbing a bone-like ladder and created the graphics, including the lettering. Additional to the cover, I also created five different traditional black and white illustrations. Each illustration represented a different story from the book and like the previous year’s, was used as an illustration to separate each new chapter.

The above information and imagery has also been added to my Traditional Illustrations page. This is one of the aspects that I love about building my own website. Not only have I been able to create a unique style and custom functions to my website, but I can also add new content to it. Next to add to my website’s portfolio will be some new commissions and a print I did for a pretty cool company that has a mystery subscription service.

If you are interested in commissioning me to design or illustrate your book cover or interior imagery, please drop me a message!
